Ab Hacks #1 – Skip All Commercials

Seeing food on TV will make you want food in your belly. A study in Health Psychology examined the effect food-based television advertisements had on viewers and concluded the impact was great: Exposure to food advertisements caused people watching TV to snack more. And it’s not even the food product being promoted; it’s the URGE to eat in general. Similarly, watching cooking shows for recipe inspiration has been linked to a greater risk for obesity. Get a DVR or just use Netflix… There are no commercials with Netflix and besides, what chick doesn’t love to “Netflix and Chill?”

Ab Hacks #2 – Chew Your Food

I’m guilty of smashing my meals when I am hungry (these six pack abs don’t feed themselves) especially if it’s a cheat meal – but really, this hack is simple: Make a point to wholly chew your food. Chewing will make you eat your meal more slowly, which research shows will make you ingest fewer calories. Taking time to chew your meal gives your body more time to register fullness, so you’ll stop when you’re full rather than suddenly realizing you’re uncomfortably stuffed.

Ab Hacks #3 – Sit Down

No squats required for this six pack hack. Instead of eating your food while standing over the kitchen counter, take a seat at the table. This tiny move will abate mindless eating, according to research published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, because you’re more likely to eat at a slower pace. I know we think the lifestyle for getting six pack abs is to grind hard all the time, but when it comes to eating, take a seat. You’ll thank yourself when you begin to see your six pack.

Ab Hacks #4: Put Healthy Food Choices In Plain Sight

Organize your fridge like a mullet: Business in the front, party in the back. The office candy bowl study found that when food was more visible and accessible, people ate more of it. And in a proximity study, researchers found that when fruits were in closer reach than buttered popcorn, participants actually chose the apple… See, maybe some of your laziness can work to your advantage!

Ab Hacks #5 – Play Angry Birds

If you’ve got a food craving, treat yourself to a game of Angry Birds or Tetris rather than attempting to “wait it out.” A 2014 study revealed that visual tasks like playing a game decreased feelings of cravings. Researchers say much of a craving is image-based, so distracting your mind with something else that is visual can minimize the strength of a craving and you won’t be diving for the chocolate.

Ab Hacks #6: Never eat out of the box or package

This is very easy: Portion out your food first. You’ll eat less. Especially when it comes to small snacking – it’s ok to enjoy treats IN MODERATION. To set yourself up for NOT eating the entire package and totally wrecking your six pack abs, pull out one portion, seal it up and store the snack out of sight.

Ab Hacks #7 – Stop Wearing Sweatpants Every Day

Wearing your favorite jeans or a professional outfit will make you feel more confident and attractive, whereas comfy clothes or lounge wear covers your body. This doesn’t necessarily encourage your mental game of eating properly or caring about your appearance.

One of the biggest parts of success in any type of goal, is through hard work, discipline and consistency. I'm glad Martial Arts provided me that vessel because I can truly say without those characteristics, I would not have been able to be successful in Fitness and build the body I have today.
