How To Stop Cravings And Choose Healthy Replacements
Ever have cravings for sweets and carbs that you just can’t quench? Well, you’re definitely not alone, and if you find yourself in a weight-loss rut, the first thing you should think about is how to stop cravings and keep your nutrition in check. Thanks to bodybuilding competitors like my friend and Platinum Coach, Jonny, and his girlfriend (in the photo below), I learned a few tips and tricks to help keep you on track but still get a taste for something sweet and fulfilling. Use their tips below to stop your cravings with healthy substitutes and get closer to your dream body!
Frozen grapes are a simple way to kill cravings for sugary foods. Jonny says he uses them when he’s dieting for his bodybuilding competitions… You know, when the cravings get strong and you’re eating a very restrictive diet.
When the grapes are frozen, they’re firm but still have a slushy consistency that makes them easy to bite into. Think of them as healthy, mini ice pops. Simply put whole grapes into a small container or bag and freeze for 4-5 hours.
Now don’t forget – You should never go overboard with any food. That’s usually an indication of a deeper problem. Limit yourself to a cup or a cup and a half.
Celery and Peanut Butter
Use this adult version of ants on a log as a healthy snack to kill cravings and hold you over between meals.
If you don’t have any fresh celery around, you can even have just a decently sized, single spoonful of peanut butter… But make sure you put the jar away before you find yourself dipping in multiple times!
Greek yogurt makes a healthy, filling snack that is perfect for the guy wanting to get shredded because it’s an awesome source of protein. Ditch anything with artificial flavors and remember that “Fat-Free” doesn’t necessarily mean “good for losing weight.” Eat the plain flavor and add your own toppings like chia or flax seeds and fresh fruit. You could also add some sugar-free maple syrup or stevia to sweeten it.
Try this before bed because the slow digesting milk protein (casein) can help to continue supplying your muscles with protein through most of the night.
DIY Trail Mix
Combine raw or roasted peanuts, almonds, natural dark chocolate nibs, & dried fruits of your choice, and snack on this protein-packed, healthy fat mix. For bonus points add sunflower and pumpkin seeds for a magnesium boost!
Word of advice: Don’t eat the prepackaged ones from the gas stations or grocery store. They have added sweets and salts that are unnecessary and can potentially slow your progress. Buy and make your own, divide them into reasonable portions and put them into ziplock bags to keep you on track to reaching your weight loss goals.
Sugar-Free Instant Protein Pudding
Now this one is the gold mine for me. My childhood love for chocolate pudding didn’t end in childhood and I’m not afraid to admit it!
For this adult version, grab some boxes of the sugar-free instant Jell-O pudding mix. Make the pudding as directed. Then, add 2 to 3 scoops of chocolate whey protein powder! As I always say, don’t go overboard with it. Portion out servings to eat later on.
This snack saved me when I was working on reaching my own goals. The pudding makes a great post-workout snack, which can be a nice alternative to a protein shake if you’re getting tired of your normal routine.
This is a great protein-packed sweet to eat whenever you need a sugar fix, a replacement for your protein shake, or a healthy dessert. Chow down!
I hope you’re starting to understand that much of your fitness progress is based on having a good diet. This is the toughest thing for most guys because a lot of times, we hate cooking. Or don’t have time for it.
