Hey guys! Today I am talking about cholesterol and testosterone production, and why you actually need more dietary cholesterol if you want to be able to produce sufficient amounts of testosterone that’s going to allow you to stay lean and build the muscle that you like.

0:11 Cholesterol is a molecule that is essential to maintain the structure of the cell membrane. Testosterone is a hormone that stimulates the secondary sexual characteristics of males.

1:30 Lipoproteins are a biochemical assembly designed for transporting lipids (like cholesterol) through water or blood.

1:46 Lipoproteins carry cholesterol to the areas of the body where it is needed.

Now let’s get down to the testosterone side…

It all starts in the brain. What happens is that your brain senses the need for testosterone, and it goes ahead and produces something known as GnRH.

3:10 Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is responsible for releasing the follicle-stimulating hormones as well as the luteinizing hormone.

From there, the pituitary gland starts the process to create testosterone, where these hormones travel down to your testis, or ovaries if you’re a woman. Here, testosterone is produced. This whole process is called the Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.

So where does cholesterol come into play?

Well, cholesterol is needed in the process to create sperm and testosterone. So if we don’t have enough cholesterol floating around, the hormones cannot combine to actually create testosterone.
