Hey guys it’s Thomas here, and today I want to give you the low down on omega 3s and why it’s truly the trifecta when it comes to brains and brawn.

0:12 Omega 3s are a type of fatty acid that the body needs for normal metabolism.

0:19 Omega 3s are going to help with brain performance, muscle building, and fat loss.

So what are omega 3s? Omega 3s are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are particularly found in fish, shellfish, and algae. You’ll mainly find them in marine sources, but you’ll also find omega 3s in some grass-fed and grass-finished meats. However, marine sources are the best source of omega 3s.

0:51 When it comes to brain function, omega 3s are extremely beneficial since they actually improve neurogenesis, which is the growth of nervous tissue. This improves cognitive function, even as an adult. Before it was thought that neurogenesis was very difficult to occur in adults, however, with omega 3s, that is not the case. In fact, omega 3s make up 8% of your brain’s overall weight.

1:58 There are 2 different kinds of omega 3s. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is an omega 3 fatty acid that is obtained through eating oily fish, fish oil pills, and more.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a primary structural component of the brain and can also be obtained through fish oils.

Now let’s talk about the muscle side of things when it comes to omega 3s. In a study by the Journal of Clinical Science, they took a look at a group of people ranging in age from 25 – 45. All of these guys were not very active individuals. They were given 4 grams of omega 3s for 8 weeks. It was found that when the participants just consumed omega 3s, there wasn’t much of a difference.

3:35 However, when that was combined with higher levels of plasma amino acids and insulin, there was a huge increase in protein synthesis. Basically, the body was taking more protein, and turning it into muscle!

4:23 mTOR activity was increased by 50% when both insulin and omega 3 were present. [muscle growth]

5:41 When it comes to fat loss, omega 3s help promote a lean body. In Scientific Reports, it was shown that those who consumed omega 3s and a high-fat diet had higher overall body temperature and lower body fat.

As always, be sure you keep it locked in here at SixPackAbs.com and I will see you next time!

Best,

Thomas
