Today I’m talking about the 2 different kinds of fat in your body: brown fat, and white fat. One is actually good for you and will help you get in shape, while the other just hangs out in your body doing unsightly things and making you miserable. So let’s talk about what they are…
First and foremost, let’s start with white fat. White fat is the basic fat that we think of when we think of fat.
0:26 White fat or white adipose tissue is one of the 2 types found in mammals and is used as a store of energy.
1:08 Mitochondria generate most of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that a cell uses as energy. So basically what I’m saying, is that this white fat is not metabolically active…it just kind of hangs out there. The purpose of this white fat is to insulate us.
1:23 White fat works as a form of insulation, keeping us warm when our body gets cold.
White fat also protects us from injuries, but you don’t need a lot of that. In fact, too much white fat is useless.
On that note, let’s talk about the good fat.
3:20 Brown fat or brown adipose tissue is the second type of fat tissue and its primary function is thermoregulation.
Brown fat is good because it’s energy-dense. It’s dark, and the reason it’s dark is because it has a lot of blood flow, minerals, and mitochondria. Mitochondria produces energy, which produces heat.
3:42 The body will generate heat from energy being produced by brown fat.
Brown fat is actually metabolically active and actually causes our metabolism to increase, simply because it has blood flow and it is creating energy. It’s sole purpose, is to keep us warm outside of shivering.
if you have a good amount of brown fat that’s derived from muscle, you can actually burn away the bad fat. How about them apples? More brown fat = burning more fat.
So here’s how you get rid of the white fat and get more of the brown fat…
4:46 Getting rid of what fat is simple. Diets such as intermittent fasting and ketosis are simple ways to get rid of white fat.
5:00 Now one of the best ways you can increase brown fat is by doing High Intensity Interval Training…quick bouts of intense exercise. This will produce irisin, a hormone that once active, will turn on genes that covert white fat to brown fat.
