I’m 41. I’m Top 1%. How I Did It.

I’m 41. I have six-pack abs. I’m a multimillionaire. I’m a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, and I’m enjoying an abundant dating life. I look at my life today and I think it’s better than what 99% of men have.

But I didn’t do everything right to get here. I don’t think I achieved my full potential, and there were a lot of mistakes I made along the way. There are things I wish I had done differently.

Today, I want to show you the things I did right. The things I’m glad I did, and the things I think you should copy if you’re in your 20s or 30s and you want to make your life better.

There’s four things that made a huge difference for me.

1. I made working out a top priority

I’ve made working out a top priority in my life going all the way back to when I was 16. I started working out on my high school football team, and I kept it going in college. Then in my 20s, I really learned what I was doing and got serious.

Starting early and never quitting for more than a few months at a time is what let me build the body I have today. I haven’t been perfect. But working out has been part of my life for a long, long time.

And it did a lot more than give me abs. It made me healthier. It made me feel better. It made me more productive, and it made my dating life better. Working out has made my life better in so many ways that I’m really glad I made it a priority early.

If you want to start, here’s what I want you to do. Start with five minutes every day, first thing in the morning. Then step it up to ten minutes, then fifteen.

You can start small and build it up. If you want a short workout you can do without going anywhere, here’s a one-minute ab workout at home.

The first thing is getting the habit going. That’s why I still work out first thing in the morning, seven days a week. I make it a priority, and I get it done.

2. I started taking nutrition seriously in my 20s

When I started SixPackAbs.com, I learned a lot about nutrition. Being around that kind of focus and discipline about eating was a huge positive influence on me.

Believe it or not, taking nutrition seriously made an even bigger impact on my life than working out. It made me look better and feel better. It made me more productive. It made me more money because of how much better I was working. It was really the foundation for a lot of the other success I found.

Here’s what that looks like for me today. I don’t eat anything until about 2 p.m. Then I start with a big salad. Every meal has a large serving of meat, fish, or eggs.

I’ve explained why I skip breakfast, if you want to understand that part of what I do. But the main thing I want you to take from this is to start paying attention to what you’re eating.

If you’re in your 20s or 30s, take your nutrition seriously right now. Get a big serving of protein at every meal and stop eating junk. Nutrition is the biggest single factor in losing your belly fat, and for me, improving it made a huge difference in the rest of my life too.

3. I kept starting businesses

When I was in college, I knew I didn’t want a 9-to-5 job. I wanted to work for myself and start my own business. So I started my first business right out of college.

That business didn’t succeed. We raised $2.5 million from angel investors, and then we flamed out and went out of business in a humiliating public way. That was how I started. I wanted to be an entrepreneur, and my first business was a big failure.

My second business made some money. It was enough to support myself, but it wasn’t a big success. My third business was Six Pack Shortcuts, which later became SixPackAbs.com. That was my first big success. Then I followed it up by starting another business, and that’s when I finally reached financial freedom.

Starting businesses has made my life better in so many ways. I get to work the way I want. I don’t have to deal with the crap that I wouldn’t want to put up with in corporate life. I’ve made far more money than I think I would have made with a 9-to-5.

For me, starting a business was the better path. But you can see from my first two businesses that wanting it doesn’t mean your first attempt is going to work.

If you’re in your 20s and you want to work for yourself, start a business as soon as possible. Maybe your first one doesn’t succeed. Maybe your second one doesn’t either. Mine didn’t get me where I wanted to be. I’m glad I kept going.

4. I became a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt

I’m really glad I dedicated about 20 years to training, invested in private lessons, and earned my Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.

It gave me self-defense and martial arts skills. But it also made me a better person in ways I didn’t get just from working out.

It made me better at dealing with conflict. I get far less frustrated when things get complicated. The mentality I developed through training has helped me in business, in relationships, and in other areas of my life.

I personally love Brazilian jiu-jitsu. You might prefer Muay Thai, judo, or another martial art. Pick something that appeals to you and start training. I strongly believe every man should train in some kind of martial art and be able to protect himself and his family.

So here’s what I want you to start doing:

  1. Work out every morning. Start with five minutes, then build to ten and fifteen.
  2. Take your nutrition seriously. Get a big serving of protein at every meal and stop eating junk.
  3. Start a business if you want to work for yourself, and keep going when an attempt doesn’t work.
  4. Train a martial art.

These four decisions made my life so much better. I’m 41 now, and I’m glad I started when I did.
