Never Start Your Day With Carbs

Break your fast with a low carb meal or a salad. That’s the answer. If you break your fast with a low carb meal, it’s going to help with weight loss, and it’s going to make you less hungry for the rest of the day.

What your first meal does to the rest of your day

So here’s why you want to do this. If you break your fast with carbs, or sugar, or worst of all, alcohol, that’s going to affect your cravings for the rest of the day. Not just for that one meal. For the rest of the day. So that first meal is the one you need to get right.

The carb spiral

And I’m sure you’ve seen this yourself. Let’s say you start off the day with some pancakes. Then lunch comes around, and you notice you’re craving carbs a little bit more.

Now, you might think it balances out. You think, I already ate carbs this morning, so I’m not going to want them as much later. But that is totally the wrong way to think. It doesn’t balance out because you already ate carbs. You want the carbs more if you ate carbs before.

So that usually leads to you eating a lot of carbs for lunch. Then you want carbs even more for dinner.

It leads to a compounding series of disasters:

  1. You eat carbs.
  2. You crave the carbs more.
  3. You eat the carbs again.
  4. You crave them again.

And so on and so forth, until you become the average American. That’s what we want to avoid.

What I do

So what I do is very simple. Fast until two. Break your fast with a salad or a low carb meal. And you break that cycle. You’re not eating the carbs first, so you’re not craving the carbs more at the next meal, and the whole thing never gets started.

The fasting half of this is in why I skip breakfast every single day.
