Why I Train Abs Every Single Day

Once you’re lean, train your abs every single day to maximize your ab definition. I recently started doing this, and it’s made a really big difference in how my abs look.

Listen: that “once you’re lean” part matters. If you’re lean enough to see your abs, start hitting them every day. If you can’t see them yet, read the last section first.

Is it overtraining to work your abs every day?

No. A lot of people think training abs daily is overtraining, or that your abs won’t develop if you hit them every day. That’s not true at all.

Your abs aren’t like your glutes or your quads, muscle groups that need a lot of recovery. You can hit them every day as long as you’re not doing a ton of sets, and you’ll get better results doing it. That’s what fitness models are doing, that’s what bodybuilders are doing, and it’s what all the guys you see with elite abs are doing every day.

My daily ab routine: three drop sets

What I personally do is three drop sets of abs every single day. By a drop set, I mean going from a hard exercise down to an easier one:

  1. Start with a hard exercise.
  2. Move to a medium-intensity exercise.
  3. Finish with a lower-intensity exercise.
  4. Keep it to three drop sets. You’re training abs every day, so you don’t need a ton of sets.

Hit every ab muscle, not just the six pack

I also make sure my drop sets hit all the different muscle groups in my abs: the rectus abdominis (the six pack), the obliques and the transverse abdominis. A lot of the ab workouts I used to do only worked the six pack. Here’s what each of your 4 ab muscles does, and if you want a routine that covers all of them with hardly any equipment, try my 1 minute ab workout.

If you can’t see your abs yet

Hold off on daily ab work. Ab exercises don’t burn belly fat. They build the muscle underneath it, and if you still have belly fat, that makes your belly bulge out more. Here’s why you should stop doing ab exercises until you can see your abs, and what to do instead.

Once you can see them, start hitting your abs every day. That’s why I train abs every single day, and why you should too once you’re lean.
